Exercise name: Fact checking

Topic: Verifying information

Keywords: media, media education, critical thinking, fact checking, misinformation,

Short Description: In this activity, students will learn about the basic way of fact checking news. There are a large number of guides on how to do Fact Checking, this activity of ours serves mainly as an opening/evoking to the topic.

Theory:

The task can be worked with individually, with each student solving on their own device, followed by group discussion. Another form is group work, where you go through the text of the article together and look for the features that are described in the activity. It is also possible to divide pupils into groups/pairs and give them questions to look for answers in the text. The questions can be identical to the questions in our ‘wheel of fortune’.

It is recommended to also introduce students to the concept of a disinformation website to help them decide whether an article is objective or manipulative. Students can be advised to start fact checking by looking to see if the article comes from a publicly known misinformation site.
