Short Description: In this exercise, students will learn about the terms “Tabloid Media” and “Serious Media”.
This is more of an intuitive task where students distinguish which type of media the headline in the assignment is from based on the introductory text that describes the difference between tabloid and serious media.
Theories:
The problem can be worked with in an individual way, where each student solves on his/her own device, followed by a common discussion. Another form is group work, where they decide together whether it is “Tabloid Media” or “Serious Media”. The premise of this task is that headlines are selected where it can be explicitly determined whether it is a serious or tabloid medium. In the following activities, the teacher contextualizes for the students that it is not always possible to draw such a simple conclusion from a headline. It is possible to name periodicals that are characterised by tabloid/serious articles and look for common features in them. Journalistic ethics should also be mentioned.
An activity could follow whereby by searching in a search engine the pupils discover headlines on a current topic that appears in the media and judge which media/headline it is using this particular example. In the case of online search work, set out with pupils in advance the criteria by which they will search for articles so that they have a guide to the amount of news that is on the internet. For example, specify the types of media, or directly provide a list of websites, specify that photos
